Simple Shifts for a Better Life

When I ask people “What have you been up to?” the usual answer is something like “Just going to work, coming home.” Know this, your work is important, but its only one part of your life.

Sure, it provides income, community, routine and a sense of purpose. It puts you in a position to help people on a daily basis. However, the other areas need attention too. Your family, your hobbies, your friends outside of work…all of these elements are essential to your sanity and overall enjoyment of life.

Of course, you know this. That’s why you’re reading this article. Now, you could quit your job right now and radically restructure your life, but you probably don’t really want that. And, truth be told, small changes are the longest lasting and most impactful.

With that in mind, here are 3 simple changes you can make right now to profoundly improve your work-life balance.

  1. Exercise Throughout Your Day

Studies have shown that short workouts done throughout the day are more beneficial for your health than trying to bang out 30 mins at the gym after work. Every 45 mins or so, get up and stretch, walk around the building, or do a few pushups. This will give you more energy, a sharper brain and loads of endorphins that make you happier. That way you have the energy to play with your friends and family when the workday is done.

  1. Meditate Frequently

Don’t force yourself into a rigorous schedule of an hour of meditation every morning. Get 5 minutes in. Then another 5 minutes at lunch. Then another 5 after work in your car. Set the timer, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. This will keep you from over-stressing and becoming reactive. Your friends and family will appreciate that…and it doesn’t take much on your part.

  1. Unplug During Important Activities

When you go to a concert, attend your kids’ soccer game, or sit down for games with your friends, turn your phone off. Better yet, leave it someplace safe in your car. You can pick it up later, I promise. For these few precious moments, ditch your digital life and live in the present for a while.

Making positive changes in your life can sometimes feel overwhelming.  You don’t have to drastically overhaul your life at one time. Start living a little differently, and soon you’ll see huge improvements.

The 3 P’s of “Legacy” Leadership!

How to Succeed as a Nursing Leader Today!

I have been in nursing for over 35 years with more than 20 years in management.   Throughout my career, I have come to know, that everyone in a leadership position doesn’t belong there.

There are those who get into leadership positions and find out that it’s not for them and get out.  Then there are those who stay but shouldn’t.   They may stay for the bump in salary or may feel ashamed to leave because others may think that they “couldn’t hack it”.

Most of us decided to stay in our positions because we know, leadership is more about helping others reach their potential than it is about us.   “It’s all about you but it’s not all about you!”

As nurses in leadership positions, we step into the role desiring to make a bigger impact in our organizations and in our spheres of influence.  God placed you here to invest your life in others. That’s why nursing is a calling for most of us. When you understand your purpose and how it gives you control over your legacy, you will be effective and enjoy the role you have as a nursing leader.

What is “Legacy” of Leadership?

The essence of legacy is when you believe that your position has a purpose that is bigger than yourself as an individual. It’s a compelling way of living forward —a way of intentionally influencing people to move toward positive outcomes which will extend beyond a generation.  It is all about you making a difference!

The essence of leadership is to live our lives in service to each other, unselfishly, for the greater good. It’s about having a passionate desire to positively impact people, who will then impact other people. It’s about nurses who find a way to lead and light the way for others.  In that sense, all nurses are leaders in the lives of our patients regardless of job titles.

Some assumptions need to be challenged though. Unselfish doesn’t mean you cannot care about yourself. The greater good of others does not mean that you have no right to benefit from the good that you do.  The greater good includes you!  Living life in service does not mean that you are a doormat!  Leadership doesn’t have to hurt!

Knowing your purpose as a leader helps to focus on why you want to lead.  The next step of the process, is understanding that leadership is a privilege.  You are in a position of influence!  You have the authority and access to influence any situation, however small or large.  You have the privilege to interact with the lives of others at a level that most others don’t.

You have power to make other people’s lives difficult or easier, chaotic or peaceful. You make things happen!  By bringing all of your resources: vision, fortitude, patience, integrity and compassion to your position within an organization, you will be strengthened, making it easier for you to advocate for yourself and others.  The power you have in leadership needs to be tempered with the reminder that it is also a privilege and that you have a purpose for being here.

How do you balance the purpose, privilege and power of leadership?  By balancing your mind, body, soul and spirit.  When they are in alignment, you will say to yourself “This is why I’m in leadership!”

You have a choice in how you will be remembered. It will be based on the decisions you make today and the motivations you use to make them.  Make a difference in your life and career!  Use your personal power to ‘Embrace your “Legacy” of Leadership Right Now!’

Moms and Nurses: The Most Special People in the World

FemaleMoms and Nurses are two of my favorite groups of people.  Why?  Because they are nurturers.  As a mom and a nurse for over 35 years.  I can identify with the biggest problem that most nurturers face.  That is the problem of taking time out for ourselves.

Moms and Nurses work long hours, develop a supernatural ability to multitask, and make their charges a priority.  However, when it comes to making oneself a priority, there is a lack of insight on how to balance the two.  To begin the process, we as nurturers must recognize this is a problem.

Acknowledging there is a problem is a first step.  Seeking opportunities to make a change is step two.  Lastly, taking action (saying yes to yourself) on opportunities to change is the most important choice a nurturer can make!

So, in light of honoring mothers on Mother’s Day and nurses for Nurse’s Week,  I am offering a discount to the Mindset Reset Experience in Staten Island on May 19 and Baltimore on June 2!  At the Experience we examine how to make ourselves a priority.  You can’t give what you don’t have! We get to look at YOUR plans, your vision and your what’s next!  We will have a meal, vision boarding and awesome speakers on the topics of beauty, mindset management, motherhood and more!

TOP 5 WAYS TO REACH YOUR GOALS SUCCESSFULLY AND QUICKLY.

New Year’s Day. Happens every year.  Its resolution time for many, even though, I am noticing more and more people every year are not making any.  When asked why, most say “I don’t follow through with them anyway, so why make them” (fear of failure) or they say “I start out good and then I lose steam” (lack of motivation or commitment).

We all have goals, both personal and professional yet so many go unrealized.  Why?  Because we haven’t gone about setting or meeting our goals in a systematic, foolproof way.

Well, I have 5, key areas of focus for you to use so you can effectively define and reach your goals successfully in a timely manner.  This systematic approach needs you to answer the big questions Who, What, When, Why and How can I plan and reach my goals consistently!

  1. Who – The number 1 way to reach your goals is to build an awareness of who you are. What influences your choices and decisions?  Is it Intellect? Emotions? Experiences? Spirituality? Even when it’s a combination of them all, how do you manage them?

You are a unique and complete human being with mental, physical, emotional and            spiritual intelligence.  You can only make appropriate goals for yourself when you              understand what makes you tick.

  1. What do you want? We all want a lot of things, for a lot of different reasons. Are your goals and aspirations related to your life and your purpose or is it someone else’s dreams you’re trying to live?

Excited Young Female DoctorWhen you’re living in your purpose with passion you will have what you really            want….satisfaction and fulfillment.  Being aware of who you are will absolutely              guide you in your ability to accurately plan for what will make you “happy.”

3. When – Right Now! We start new endeavors all the time based on dates i.e. New Year, a holiday or birthday. Or we base new beginnings on events. For example,              “I’m going on a cruise so I need to lose 10 pounds before I go”.  These motivations               rarely,  if ever, work and even when they do, they don’t work long term.

workplace-1245776_1920 (2) Don’t procrastinate.  Procrastination is a stealer of dreams and a saboteur of                  accomplishing goals.  ‘Don’t put off for tomorrow what you can do today’ needs    to be your mantra when it comes to your goals.  It’s all about renewing our            commitment to ourselves!  When you don’t allow procrastination to hold you back          you will always be moving forward with less setbacks or missed opportunities.

       4. Why – Because you are unique and you have a unique reason why you are here.             You were born not only to receive from the world but to give something back.  Your           very existence means you are part of a bigger plan.  When you operate within your          purpose in life, you will feel the joy because you will be setting, meeting and fulfilling        your goals and your purpose for being here.

      5. How – The secret strategy to reaching your goals is really found in personal                   development. Tapping into your personal power is the long lasting motivation you             need.   Personal power is enhanced by two things: focus and connection.

a. Develop Focus Distraction is easy to come by in this day and time. Cell phones,              computers, social media and TV, just to name a few.  Many of us tend to have                       work-a-holic tendencies.  ‘Striving instead of Thriving’ We do for everyone else and             fit ourselves in as a last resort.

You have to prioritize and focus. Just like thoroughbred racehorses, sometimes you must put on your blinders. One acronym for focus is Follow One Course Until Successful’ and one of my own acronyms for focusing on your path is not to let the Foolishness of Others Corrupt or Undo your Success’.  That means watch the people around you. Haters do exist.

My daughter and I.

b. Connect with like-minded people.  Build a network of people who will encourage and support you in reaching your goals. There are plenty of nay-sayers and sometimes they live within your own head.

Surrounding yourself with the people, activities and time to support you, will help you successfully reach your goals in record time and will relieve some of the burden in getting there.

Slow down. Take a deep breath. What’s the hurry? Why wear yourself out? Just what are you after anyway?

(Jeremiah 2:25a -The Message)

Oh my God! I’m late!!! (I look at the time). I was supposed to leave 20 minutes ago. But if I hurry, I will get there right on time! As I approach my journey with God, I realize that this conversation is repeated constantly in my head: Oh my God!!! I’m late!!!…. And it is this feeling of being “late” that causes me to want to hurry, so that I get to my destination “on time.” I become restless, anxious, impatient, and irritated when I feel like I am not getting there quick enough or an unexpected turn lands me in the wrong direction. I rarely pause to ask, Just what is God trying to deposit in me or get out of me in…

Live Interview With Naomi D. Jones and Janine Kelbach

Entrepreneurship makes the world go around.  Technology that produced the computer

naomi
Naomi D. Jones. RN, MS, CRNI

changed the way we live and do business because of entrepreneurs like Steve Jobs.

Healthcare has evolved through entrepreneurs like Florence Nightingale who started the first nursing school and Lillian Wald who founded the Henry Street Settlement and Visiting Nurse Service of New York.

Entrepreneurs see a need and then use vision , resources and passion to fill that void.

Nurses are becoming entrepreneurs at an astounding rate and they are not only helping people, they are making money!
Here is an interview that I did with Janine Kelbach owner of WriteRN writing services and blogger for The Six Figure Nurse.  Here’s a glimpse into my journey as an entrepreneur.. …

What is the name of your company?

Consults Unlimited Inc. but I am known as the Life Coach RN

What exactly does your company do?

I provide coaching, mentoring, books and speaking presentations for Nursing Leaders. My goal is to help nurses who are in leadership balance their life purpose and their career. I teach nurses self-development principles and how to align their mind, body, soul and spirit so they will become better leaders of themselves and become more effective in leading others. When you understand and embrace yourself and your journey in life, you can attain fulfillment and joy while working in the profession as a nursing leader.

Why did you start this company?

The first reason for starting my own business is that being a nurse for over 35 years, I have had the opportunity to work with ‘the good, the bad and the ugly’ types of nursing leaders. The ones who were ‘good’ helped me grow in my career as a nurse, a woman and as a human being. Even though nursing is a caring profession, we often are not good to each other. Take the phrase ‘Nurses eat their Young’. I wanted to change that. I wanted to create a culture of compassion and kindness for the nurse who is on the front line of providing healthcare to the world. When the opportunity arose for me to step up to a leadership position, I made a conscious decision to do my best to positively impact my staff and my peers. During my 20 years as a nursing leader I was able to develop skills and strategies that not only made me successful in this endeavor but it allowed me to help other nursing leaders realize they could have the same results. I want to continue to make an impact and that’s why I decided to work with nursing leaders in this area as a business.  Read More.

“But Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back to the things left behind is fit for the kingdom of God.”  (Luke 6:62)

As I sit with my 2 year old daughter watching the movie Frozen, the lead character begins to sing the song “Let it Go”.  These particular words instantly grab my attention:

It’s funny how some distance

Makes everything seem small

And the fears that once controlled me Can’t get to me at all

It’s time to see what I can do

To test the limits and break through

No right, no wrong, no rules for me

Think On These Things

How to tenderize

BBC Diamonds

For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.” – Proverbs 23:7 KJV

In popular culture, women are being enticed into displaying petty and manipulative behavior. The ‘side-eye’ is common, in jest and in reality.  Hard-heartedness is considered preferable to being kind or sweet. Even women of the church sometimes pride themselves on their ability to “go there if they need to”.  For many, they need to know that their base level is there as a fall-back just in case their nice side does not protect or get them what they want.

Why is it so difficult to cultivate a gracious spirit?  Overall, I see that as people we are losing our ability to be civil and Christ-like in our dealings with each other.  We do not want to be taken advantage of…

Mindset: The Key to Creating Balance

How do nurses create change, develop balance and relieve stress?

by Naomi D. Jones RN, MS, CRNI

scales-311504_1280Are nursing leadership and work life balance contradictory terms? Many nurses are wondering if this idea of a balanced life is fact or fiction. Many organizations state they promote “work life balance” as a recruiting tool. When speaking to those same nursing leaders, the feeling of balance seems to be elusive.  I had a great conversation this week with a fellow nurse friend of mine about how we attain equilibrium in our lives as nurse leaders. What became very clear early in our conversation is that managing our careers is difficult to say the least.  There are so many things you have to coordinate i.e. yourself, your staff, (direct and indirect reports), co-workers, your upper management team and don’t forget the work itself!   Then we have a “Life” that also needs management. Relationships with spouses, partners, children, grandchildren and parents pose their own challenges.  Handling personal finances is another factor where achieving balance necessitates confrontation.  In today’s economy, so many nurses I know work more than one job.  Nurses in management may experience some limits since they are salaried and already work long hours.

Balance vs Imbalance

In all of these arenas, balance is the key to having a great life!  If we don’t balance all of these areas well, we may become discouraged and lose our passion and joy in what we do which leads to burnout.

Burnout is the result of imbalance.  Frustration, disappointment and stress are encompassing nursing leaders in homecare, at the bedside and behind the desk (depending on where you work). Expectations of higher productivity, increasing demands to do more with less, the squeeze between staff and company goals intensifies the stress nurses feel. That stress makes for short tempers which can lead to episodes of disrespect and bullying which plague our profession.

Create Change

How do we create change in our lives, develop balance and relieve the stress from these situations?  Read More…
